Sanford, FL is located at the northernmost point of Seminole County. After the 2010 census the population of the city of Sanford was 55, 500. The population of Sanford is included in the total of 2.13 million people who are counted in the Sanford-Kissimmee-Orlando Metropolitan Statistical Area. Sanford has a total of 26.5 square miles, and the population density 2,333 per square mile. The city is known as ‘Historic Waterfront Gateway City’ due to its proximity to Lake Monroe. This lake is the head of navigation on the St. John’s River. The St. John’s River actually meanders its way all the way from Sanford to Jacksonville. Prior to becoming a base for the US Army during the Second Seminole War, Sanford was home to Native Americans for thousands of years. The network of lakes and rivers was ideal for the nature dependent lifestyle of the Indians.
Real estate in Sanford varies greatly. Some properties are located on the shores of Lake Monroe, while others are further inland without the exclusive water access. There is always something going on in or around Sanford each week. Starting in the spring, on the second Thursday of each month, downtown Sanford throws a party called ‘live after five’, which is essentially a large, outdoor happy hour. Tickets are only $5 and beer flows for 3 hours for free. Sanford is also home to the only zoo in this area! Each spring the doors open at 6pm to the local residents to have ‘Brews Around the Zoo’. This even helps raise money for the zoo and its inhabitants. Scattered throughout the zoo are beer booths and food trucks with various types of beer and wine to consume.
Sanford also has the second largest airport in the area – Sanford International Airport. This airport does have flights all over the country and can be a great option to use rather than Orlando International simply because of the fewer number of travelers. Finally, this also has it’s own mall with all of your standard restaurants and shops. The area has recently experienced a population influx and a subsequent building boom near the mall.
The school system for Stanford is overall fairly good when compared to some of the other districts around Orlando. Midway and Pine Crest Elementary were both rated a 3 out of 10 on greatschools.org. Millennium middle school came in with a score of 8 out of 10 and Seminole High School was rated a 6 over all.
