Oviedo, FL is located in south, central area of Seminole County and per the 2010 United States Census; it had a total population of 33,500, which was a 25% increase from the previous census in 2000. The city of Oviedo is a total of 15.4 square miles, which makes the population density 2,200 per square mile. Oviedo is also included in the Kissimmee-Orlando Metropolitan Statistical Area. A man named Andrew Aulin, who saw the need for a post-office in the area, founded the town of Oviedo back in the late 1870’s. He wanted to name the post office after the Spanish heritage that the state of Florida had, so he chose Oviedo, which was also the name of a city in southern Spain.
At about 20 minutes away from downtown Orlando, Oviedo is a popular place for commuters who work downtown to live. Due to this and the proximity to University of Central Florida, the median household income in this area is quite high. The northern part of the city limits border Lake Jessup, which is known for fishing, boating and various water sport activities. In the northwest corner of the city lays the Oviedo Forest Community Lake as well as the Little Big Econ State Forest, which offers camping, canoeing, and kayaking. Additionally, Oviedo also has its own mall. This mall has various restaurants attached to it and a 14-screen movie theatre. This city also backs up to UCF and you can find residents of Oviedo tailgating at UCF football games during the beautiful weather in the fall.
