The median income per household in Ocoee was $53,000 in 2010 and about 6% of the population here lives below the poverty line. There has been a considerable upward trend in median income in the last few years. This is a result of both becoming a destination for desirable real estate, and also a great place to live that is outside the hectic day to day life of downtown Orlando, but close enough to be an easy commute.
Real estate prices here vary quite a bit as well. The average sale price for a home in 2013 was $180,000, but you can find prices as low as $30,000 in the city, going all the way up to over $450,000 on the waterfront of Lake Apopka. Ocoee also plays host to a myriad of lakes. Some of the lakes included are Starke Lake, Lake Olympia, Lake Johio, Spring Lake, Peach Lake, Prairie Lake and Lake Meadow, with several smaller lakes dotting the countryside. Being a larger geographical area, there is more movement in the real estate market than its local counterparts of Winter Haven and Oakland.
The possible schools that children might attend here include Ocoee Middle School, which ranked a 7 out of 10 on greatschools.org. Unfortunately, Ocoee Elementary and Ocoee High School come in with much lower scores of 4 out of 10. However, Spring Lake Elementary is a much higher rated elementary school with a 9 out of 10 due to the quality of teachers and staff. Thornebrooke Elementary boasts one of the highest scores in the region with 10 out of 10. The reviews on this school are fantastic, and have 5 stars from people who have offered a personal review on it. Finally, Legacy High Charter School would be one worthy of consideration with a 9 out of 10 rating – a far cry from Ocoee High, which only scored a 4.
Attractions in the area obviously include Lake Apopka and all of the smaller lakes. There are plenty of activities ranging from boating and all the watersports associated with that to paddle boarding and scenic tours. Additionally, located within Ocoee is the West Oaks Mall. This mall includes all of your ordinary shopping stores and eateries as well as an AMC with 14 theatres and Treasure Cove Mini Golf just next to the property. Directly south of the mall is the West Oaks Town Center, which is a more upscale area available to shop at. To the north one can check out West Orange Memorial Gardens, devoted to our fallen heroes. One notable resident in this area was Bart Bryant – a professional golfer!
