Maitland, FL is another town that was erected around a fort, which was built during the Second Seminole War. Fort Maitland was constructed on the western shore of what now is Lake Maitland back in 1838 and was then torn down following the conclusion of the war. What remained was a settlement that grew up around the fort and it was called Maitland. This small settlement got heavily involved in citrus production, which helped to contribute to the areas wealth.
The geography of the area that is Maitland is littered with lakes that are often host to water sport activities like wake boarding, jet skiing and water skiing. Over 15 large lakes exist within the city limits and there are some very impressive pieces of real estate to be discovered. Mansions line most of the lakes in the area, making the median income per household in this area a whopping $69,000, which also happens to be the highest in the greater Orlando metropolitan area.
Due to the extensive history this area has, there are several century old houses that can be viewed. Arthur O’Heir House, Chadbourne Hall, The Thurstons House, The Episcopal Parsonage, and the Hill-Stone House are all over 100 years old and are available for view to the public. Interestingly, the name Hillstone now adorns a restaurant located in Winter Park and is known for its very upscale, expensive cuisine.
Maitland is also one of the stops on the much anticipated SunRail project that has been going on now for several years. SunRail is a commuter train that will initially run from Debary down to Sand Lake Road, with several stops in between, and help to alleviate some of the traffic currently experienced on interstate 4. This stop will also help commuters arrive at the Maitland Center, which is a 220-acre complex that is called home for over 400 companies!! Some of these companies include EA Tiburon (the development team associated with Madden NFL), Sonny’s Real Pit BBQ and a main location for the large investment company, Charles Schwab. Additionally, the RDV sportsplex is the summer training facility for the Orlando Magic and also hosts many summer league basketball games that can be viewed by any local resident with the purchase of a ticket. The RDV also has two ice hockey rinks, an exercise facility and the broadcasting headquarters for Fox Orlando, which travels with and covers the team for each game all season.
The education services in the city of Maitland are some of the best in all of Orange County. This can surely be attributed to the fact that these residents are some of the wealthiest in the Orlando Metropolitan area. Most all of the schools rate 9 out of 10 or a grade of A. The real estate prices in this area vary greatly. Some condos or townhomes are listed at or below $50,000, while we have some mansions on lakes in this area that sell for over $3 million.
