About Christmas, FL

Founded in 1837 with the construction of Fort Christmas, the city with the same name is only 3.4 square miles large with a population of just over 1,100. The fort was one of 200 in the area that were built during the Second Seminole War to fight off the local Indians who had lived here for hundreds, if not thousands of years. Within the 3.4 square miles, there is no water, only land, so the attractions in this area, as you can imagine, are limited. Real estate here does not change hands that often with a handful of new households being added to this small town from in the last decade, although realtors do have some current listings here.

Fort Christmas is actually located about 4 miles away from what one would describe as a few streets that encompass the downtown area of Christmas. The Fort is a historical site and has been preserved by the state to serve as a reminder as to what occurred throughout the state of FL when it was being taken from the Indians.

Just down route 50 from the downtown area of Christmas is Jungle Adventures – a real, natural, animal park home to many alligators. The site also boasts the largest gator shaped building in the entire world at just over 220 feet long. There are boat rides, alligators and authentic food available at this attraction.

Just a little further up the road and you will arrive at Orlando Wetlands Park. This park is home to Lake Cone and the St. Johns River runs through the region, providing the wildlife with a constant source of fresh water. Inside the parks you can go on airboat rides and search for gators in the wild, as well as camp out and brave the outdoors for a night. The river here meanders all over the place and there are hundreds of miles of waterways, easy to get lost in.

On the opposite side of route 50 are the Canaveral Marshes Conservation Area, which is a state park and is aimed at conserving the natural Marshes that have existed here for hundreds of thousands of years. There is plenty of real estate out here for all the wildlife that inhabits this area.

Christmas is not located very far from Cape Canaveral – the staging point for the now defunct space shuttle program. Although it is noting that several private companies are now working out of that location with their own goals and aspirations for space travel. The Kennedy Space Center Visitors Complex is also open to the general public for a small fee. Some of the most innovative technologies and biggest human accomplishments are on display here. It is truly breath taking and mind boggling to contemplate the vastness of space and what our astronauts went through on their journey to the moon and back, but the center helps to put this into perspective. This attraction is only located about 30 minutes from Christmas. Christmas also happens to be a place with a GREAT view for rocket launches at the cape due to its close proximity.

Other than the local gator animal park, there are many thousands of acres that are available for hunting. With no noise ordinances this far away from the city of Orlando, hunting and shooting guns in the woods and wetlands is a common occurrence. Many people hunt here for boar, gator or turkey.
